What should you write down during a case interview versus keep in your head?

I take too many notes during practice cases and then lose time looking through the page. If I take fewer notes, I'm worried I'll forget numbers or lose track of the structure. What information is actually worth writing down during a case interview, and what should you just process mentally?
Mayank G.CoachWrite down information you are likely to need again: the objective, your structure, key numbers, assumptions, and the main conclusions from each section. You do not need a transcript of everything the interviewer says.

I like to clarify the objective, geography, timeline, and a couple definitions before structuring. Sometimes I worry I'm turning the opening into an interrogation. How many clarifying q's is normal before it starts looking like I can't handle ambiguity?
Mayank G.CoachClarifying questions are useful when they change the way you would structure or solve the case. They are less useful when you are asking for details simply because uncertainty feels uncomfortable.
Is it okay to change your hypothesis halfway through a case interview?

I sometimes get attached to my initial hypothesis because I feel like changing it makes me look inconsistent. But obviously new information can point in a different direction. How should you change your hypothesis during a case without making it seem like the first one was just a random guess?
Mayank G.CoachYes. A hypothesis is supposed to guide your analysis, not lock you into your first idea. If new evidence contradicts it, updating the hypothesis is exactly what strong problem solving requires.
How much silence is okay while you're thinking in a case interview?

I tend to talk almost continuously because silence feels awkward in an int. Problem is I sometimes start speaking before I've actually figured out what I want to say. Is taking 20-30 seconds of silence okay, or does that feel too long to an interviewer?
Mayank G.CoachSilence is completely acceptable when it is purposeful. Interviewers would generally rather see you take a short pause and return with a clear answer than listen to unstructured thinking while you search for one.
How detailed should your 'why consulting' answer actually be?

My why consulting answer is getting kinda long because I try to explain the work, learning, people, and why now. It sounds fine on paper but in an int it starts feeling rehearsed. How much detail do you actually need before it becomes too much?
Mayank G.CoachYour answer should be specific enough to sound personal but short enough to feel conversational. Usually two or three reasons are enough if each one connects to your own experience.
Can you ask the interviewer to repeat a long case prompt?

Sometimes the opening prompt has so many details that I miss one while taking notes. I know I can ask clarifying questions, but asking them to repeat part of the prompt feels a bit awkward. Is that completely fine, or should you be able to capture everything the first time?

Had a strong case but a weak fit answer. Can one part sink the whole interview?

I felt pretty good about the case part of my int, but one of my fit answers was messy and I definitely rambled. The interviewer had to pull me back to the actual q. How separately do firms score case vs fit? Can one weak answer outweigh an otherwise strong interview, or is it more about the overall pattern?
Mayank G.CoachMost firms do not treat the case and fit portions as one blended impression. Interviewers usually form judgments across several dimensions, so a weak answer can hurt without automatically erasing a strong case.
McKinsey BA: should I choose the early or regular interview window?

I have the option to interview early for McKinsey BA or stay in the regular window. I would obviously like an earlier answer, but I am not sure whether taking the early slot changes the bar or reduces the number of spots available later. If I could use another couple weeks of case prep, is there any strategic reason to rush?
Mayank G.CoachChoose the window based primarily on readiness and any real deadline you are managing. There is little value in taking an earlier interview if the extra time would materially improve your case and personal-experience performance.
How long is the gap between MBB interview rounds?

What is a normal amount of time between R1 and final round at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain? I am trying to plan practice around work and I have seen people report everything from a few days to several weeks.
Mayank G.CoachBoth ends of that range can happen. Timing depends on interviewer availability, office scheduling, recruiting volume, and whether the firm is trying to meet another offer deadline.
McKinsey offered me an early BA interview. Is that a good sign?

I was offered an early interview for a McKinsey BA role. Does getting that option mean anything about how strong my application is, or is it just scheduling / recruiting logistics? I do not want to overread it.
Mayank G.CoachTreat the invitation as positive only in the basic sense that the firm wants to interview you. Do not infer a special scoring advantage or lower interview bar from the timing.

I understand there may be an online assessment, recruiter screen, R1, and final round, but I am not sure which steps are universal. I am mostly trying to plan prep timing so I am not surprised by a fast turnaround between stages.
