Rejected by McKinsey once. How realistic is getting another interview after the cool-off?

  • Cool-off Period

I interviewed with McKinsey before and got rejected. I was told to wait before reapplying, and I am now trying to understand whether people actually get another interview after that period or if the first rejection basically follows you forever. I know I need to improve, but how much does the old interview matter once the cool-off is over?

A previous rejection does not permanently close the door. Firms reinterview candidates all the time after the recommended waiting period, especially when the candidate has built a stronger profile or clearly addressed the issues that held them back before.

Rejected by McKinsey London, can I apply to another office before the cool-off ends?

  • Cool-off Period

Got rejected after McK R1 in London and recruiter mentioned waiting before applying again. But does that mean McKinsey globally or just London / same role? I'm also eligible to work in Dubai and saw a position there that fits my background way better. Don't wanna apply and accidentally make things worse lol

Do not assume that changing the office automatically bypasses the reapplication period.

What should you actually do during an MBB cool-off period?

  • Cool-off Period

I have to wait before reapplying and I do not want to spend the next year just doing random cases. What are the highest-value things to improve during the cool-off so the next application is actually stronger?

Use the cool-off to improve both the application and the interview, not just one of them. The strongest reapplications usually look meaningfully different on paper and in the interview room.
