In McKinsey cases, how much should you drive vs wait for the interviewer?

I know McKinsey is more interviewer-led, but I am confused about how passive you are supposed to be. Do you still suggest next steps, or mainly answer the question they ask and wait?
Interviewer-led does not mean passive. You still need to show structured thinking, initiative, and judgment within the question you are given.
How do you build MECE case structures without memorized frameworks?

I can use profitability / market entry type frameworks, but when the case is unusual I struggle to build a clean MECE structure from scratch. How do people get good at this without memorizing 50 templates?
Start from the decision the client needs to make, then identify the few questions that must be true or understood to make that decision.
A senior BCG person emailed me good luck before R1. Does that mean anything?

Someone senior at BCG who I spoke with earlier sent me a quick 'good luck' note before my R1. Is that just being nice, or should I read it as a positive internal signal?
It is positive that they remembered you and chose to reach out, but do not convert that into an assumption about the interview outcome.
Three interviews in BCG R1. Is that normal?

My BCG first round has three separate interviews on the schedule. I expected two. Is three interviews a bad sign, or just office-specific process?
Interview counts can vary by office, role, and recruiting cycle. Three interviews in a round does not automatically mean anything negative.
Can you ask for extra information during a case interview?

When I am casing, sometimes I want to ask the interviewer for a number or detail that was not in the prompt. Is it okay to request additional information, or does that make it look like I cannot work with ambiguity?
Yes, you can ask for information when it is genuinely needed to test a hypothesis or move the analysis forward.
Are alternative case structures okay if they are not the 'standard' answer?

Sometimes I structure a case differently from the sample solution but my buckets still seem logical. In an MBB interview, is that okay or are they expecting a fairly specific structure?
There is rarely only one acceptable structure. Interviewers care whether your approach is logical, relevant to the question, and easy to follow.
I barely practiced live cases. Am I cooked for MBB R1?

My first-round interview is coming up and most of my prep has been solo. I know the frameworks and have done cases on my own, but I have only cased live with people a few times. How bad is that?
Solo work can build knowledge, but live casing tests a different skill: thinking while someone interrupts, challenges assumptions, and changes direction.
Does BCG ever call candidates with results on weekends?

I finished BCG R1 late this week and now I am obsessively checking my phone. Do recruiters ever call with interview results on Saturday/Sunday, or should I just stop thinking about it until Monday?
Recruiting communication timing varies by office and cycle. Weekend calls can happen, but they are not something you should expect or interpret.
Messed up one option question in a McKinsey case. Am I probably done?

I had a McKinsey case and there was one multiple-choice style question where I chose the wrong option. I realized it later and now that one moment is stuck in my head way more than the rest of the interview. Can you still get through after messing up a question like that, or is it usually game over once that happens?
One wrong answer does not automatically end your chances. Interviewers are evaluating the total performance, not treating the interview like a one-question exam.
I did not finish the case in Round 1. Does that usually mean I am done?

I had a Round 1 recently and we did not fully finish the case before time ran out. I am not sure how bad that is because the conversation itself felt decent, but obviously it is hard not to focus on the fact that we did not get all the way to a polished ending. For people who have been through this, does not finishing usually mean rejection, or can you still pass if the rest was strong enough?
Not finishing does not automatically mean rejection. Interviewers care much more about the quality of your thinking, structure, judgment, and communication across the case than about whether every case ends in a perfect final bow.
Any last advice for BCG Round 1?

I have BCG Round 1 coming up soon and I feel decently prepared, but I am still nervous about whether there is anything specific I should be keeping top of mind for that first round. Any advice that actually helped people going into BCG R1?
At this stage, you are usually better off reinforcing a few high-value basics than chasing new exotic tips. Focus on clean structure, calm communication, solid math, and strong synthesis.
How can I ask better questions at the end of an interview?

I always feel awkward at the very end of interviews when they ask if I have questions. Mine are not terrible, but they do feel a bit generic. How do you make them better?
The best closing questions are usually specific enough to show genuine interest, but broad enough to invite a real answer. Questions about the interviewer’s path, the office, recent work, or how they think about development are often stronger than generic website-level questions.
