Is Your PhD Defence Slipping Past Your Consulting Start Date? You May Have More Room Than You Think...

Share:

NEGOTIATION

Your offer says September.

Your dissertation says... maybe September.

Those are not the same thing.

A delayed experiment, committee revision, examiner schedule, or defence date can suddenly turn the final months of your PhD into a calendar problem.

And your first instinct may be to hide it.

That can make the problem harder.

You think the bad news is the delay... but timing may be the bigger issue

Imagine waiting until three weeks before your start date.

You email the recruiter:

“My defence has moved. Can I start later?”

Now the firm is solving your problem on a very short clock.

Compare that with raising the issue when the risk becomes credible, explaining what changed, and giving a realistic range of dates.

Same delay.

Different conversation.

Uncertainty is easier to manage when it arrives early.

That does not mean emailing the recruiter every time an experiment takes two extra days.

It means recognizing when a possibility has become something the firm may actually need to plan around.

For an overview of what happens once the offer is in your hands, read Consulting Offer Next Steps.

The temptation is to explain your entire dissertation... resist it

You know why the defence moved.

The assay failed. Then the reviewer asked for another analysis. Then your committee member went on leave.

To you, every step matters.

To the recruiter, most of that is background.

They need the operational answer.

What you are tempted to explainWhat the recruiter needsThe sharper message
Every research setbackIs the start date at risk?“My defence may move into September.”
Why the committee changed its mindWhat timing do you need?“I would like to discuss an October start.”
Why this was unavoidableHow certain is the new date?“I expect confirmation by Friday.”
How stressed you areWhat should happen next?“Could we discuss available start cohorts?”

This is consulting communication before your first day.

Headline. Implication. Ask.

Your PhD trained you to defend every detail.

This conversation rewards compression.

Then comes the question you actually care about: how much should you ask for?

Not the maximum.

The credible amount.

Suppose you think the defence could move by two weeks.

Do not automatically ask for three months “just to be safe.”

Suppose you realistically need six weeks to defend, submit revisions, move, and arrive ready.

Do not ask for one week because you are afraid of sounding difficult.

The stronger request solves the real problem once.

A fake compromise can create a second negotiation later.

Give the recruiter a realistic date and explain the constraint succinctly.

If alternatives exist, ask about them rather than assuming.

Your tone matters more than having the perfect script

You are not issuing a demand.

You are also not confessing a failure.

You are discussing a logistical change after both sides have already decided they want to work together.

A useful structure is simple:

  1. Reconfirm that you are excited to join.
  2. State the timing change clearly.
  3. Explain the practical reason briefly.
  4. Ask about a specific revised start date or available options.
  5. Offer to provide confirmation when your defence schedule is finalized.

That is enough.

For more examples of how to frame requests without turning them into ultimatums, continue with How to Negotiate: Examples for Consulting.

The awkward conversation may be better than the heroic workaround

You could try to defend on Friday, move over the weekend, and start consulting on Monday.

Technically possible.

Possibly miserable.

A new consulting role already has a steep ramp. Your dissertation already demanded years from you.

Starting one while still mentally inside the other may not be the victory it appears to be.

So when the defence slips, do not begin by asking:

“How do I make the original date work?”

Ask:

“What start date lets me finish one chapter properly and begin the next one ready?”

Then have that conversation before the calendar has it for you.
