Do You Need a Referral More Because You Are Not in an MBA Program? The Difference Is Not Quite What You Think

Share:

REFERRAL

You look at consulting recruiting and notice something uncomfortable.

MBA students seem to have firm presentations, structured recruiting calendars, alumni everywhere and classmates who already know the process.

Your specialised Master’s program may have... one consulting club.

So a referral must matter more for you.

Right?

Maybe. But not for the reason you think.

A referral cannot turn you into a different candidate...

A consultant referral does not magically convert a non-MBA Master’s application into an MBA application.

Your degree, graduation timeline, target role and recruiting channel still matter.

What the referral can do is add context.

That becomes useful when your profile is less immediately familiar.

Imagine a recruiter sees:

“MSc in Biomedical Engineering.”

That could mean almost anything commercially.

Now imagine a consultant has already spoken with you and believes you communicate clearly, understand consulting and have a credible reason for applying.

Same degree.

Different signal.

The referral adds information. Not qualifications.

That distinction matters because candidates often expect the referral itself to produce the interview. Do Consulting Referrals Guarantee an Interview? explains why the mechanics are more nuanced.

The MBA advantage you notice may actually be something else...

MBA candidates often benefit from a recruiting environment built around consulting.

Firm events arrive on campus.

Second-years share notes.

Career services know the timelines.

Peers practise cases together.

Your Master’s degree may give you none of that.

So when you network with a consultant, the value is not limited to a referral.

You may discover that your resume reads too academically.

You may learn that the role you planned to apply for is not the role people from your program normally target.

You may realise your “why consulting?” answer sounds like a graduate school statement.

That conversation can matter before the referral ever does.

What you expectWhat may actually helpWhy it matters
“A referral gets me an interview”A person helps contextualise your candidacyYour profile becomes easier to understand
“MBA candidates have better backgrounds”They may simply have clearer recruiting infrastructureYou can recreate parts of it yourself
“I need senior contacts”A recent Consultant may understand your exact transitionRelevance can beat hierarchy
“More referrals must be better”One credible advocate may be enoughVolume is not the same as signal

So should you network harder than an MBA candidate?

Possibly.

But “harder” is the wrong objective.

Network more deliberately.

If you are completing a Master’s in analytics, engineering, public policy, life sciences, finance or another specialised field, identify what a recruiter might not immediately understand.

Then use conversations to close those information gaps.

Ask people with comparable backgrounds how they entered consulting.

Ask which level they joined.

Ask how they translated their Master’s work into business impact.

Ask which recruiting channel actually applied to them.

For the broader recruiting picture, Can You Get into Consulting with a Non-MBA Master’s Degree? shows where the degree fits before networking even begins.

The referral becomes powerful after one thing changes...

At the beginning, you are a resume.

A Master’s degree. A few internships. Maybe a thesis. Maybe leadership.

After a strong conversation, you can become something more specific in someone’s mind.

“The data science Master’s student who explained the pricing problem really clearly.”

“The public policy candidate who actually understands what generalist consulting involves.”

“The engineer I’d be comfortable putting in front of a client.”

That is a different kind of signal.

And when someone refers that person, the referral is doing much more than attaching a name to an application.

It is attaching a story.
