Can You Fit Consulting Assessments Around a One-Year Master’s? The Problem Starts Before You Feel Busy

ONLINE GAMES

Your Master’s timetable looks manageable.

Three courses.

One group project.

Maybe a thesis or capstone.

You decide consulting preparation can fit around it.

Then the invitations arrive.

One assessment expires this week.

A networking call gets moved.

Two classmates want to case.

Your professor reminds you the project presentation is Friday.

The workload did not suddenly become impossible. It became simultaneous.

Waiting for free time sounds sensible... until you realise none is coming

A one-year Master’s has a strange rhythm.

At the beginning, everything feels possible.

Then recruiting, coursework, student societies, group assignments and job applications begin occupying the same weeks.

If your plan is:

“I’ll prepare when this assignment is over,”

you may keep moving preparation one week forward until the assessment is already in your inbox.

Instead, separate maintenance preparation from deadline preparation.

Maintenance is the work you do before anything is urgent.

A few numerical questions.

One case.

A short review of fit stories.

Familiarity with the major assessment types.

Deadline preparation happens after you receive the actual invitation.

Do not build the engine when the race starts.

Your calendar should protect small blocks, not imaginary weekends

Students often design heroic schedules.

“Saturday: six hours of case prep.”

Then Saturday becomes groceries, a group project, an event, laundry and recovery from the week.

The better plan can look almost disappointingly small.

Small blocks compound.

And because they are easier to repeat, you are less dependent on one perfect weekend that never arrives.

Then the invitation comes... and your priorities have to change

Suppose an assessment has a defined completion window.

That is no longer a generic item on your career to-do list.

It is a time-bound recruiting step.

Look at the coming days and move lower-priority work where possible.

Finish the assessment when you are rested enough to think clearly.

Do not automatically leave it to the final evening because you technically have until midnight.

A deadline is not a recommended start time.

At the same time, do not sacrifice three days of coursework trying to become perfect at one assessment.

You are balancing expected value.

Preparation matters.

So does completing your degree.

So do the next firms in the pipeline.

The hardest part may be keeping recruiting from occupying every hour...

Consulting applications create unlimited possible work.

Another case.

Another networking message.

Another assessment guide.

Another resume edit.

You can always do one more thing.

That makes recruiting unusually good at consuming the spaces between everything else.

Create a stopping rule.

“When I finish this 45-minute assessment block, I return to my econometrics assignment.”

“When I complete two cases this week, I stop casing until Sunday.”

“When the application is submitted, I stop reopening the resume.”

Stay Motivated During Consulting Recruiting Season goes deeper into managing the longer recruiting cycle without letting it take over your Master’s.

Because your goal is not to spend every available hour preparing.

It is to be ready when an hour suddenly matters.

And in a one-year program, that hour tends to arrive sooner than you planned.
