Evaluate whether the next level changes your skills, responsibilities, and future options enough to justify staying. A promotion is valuable when it gives you a meaningfully different role, not just another year on the same trajectory.
Consider the kind of work you are getting, whether you will manage others, client exposure, sponsorship, compensation, and how the next title is valued in the exits you care about.
If the next year gives you team leadership and ownership of a workstream, the experience may compound. If you are repeating similar projects while delaying a clear target exit, the marginal value can be lower.
Write down what you expect to gain from staying twelve more months. If those outcomes are unlikely, start testing the market rather than staying only because promotion feels like the default. For more detail, see the management consulting overview.
