Start with the work you will actually do, not the label. Generalist and specialist paths can lead to very different project mixes even inside the same firm.
A generalist role usually gives you broader exposure early on. A specialist role can give you faster depth, stronger staffing relevance in your area and a clearer professional identity.
The tradeoff matters most if you already know what you want. If you strongly prefer one function or industry, specialization may be an advantage rather than a constraint. If you are using consulting to explore, breadth has more value.
Ask about staffing, promotion criteria, mobility between tracks and what recent hires actually worked on in their first year. Those answers are more useful than assuming one title automatically creates better exits.
