It can simply be part of the case design. Being asked where to go next is an opportunity to show prioritization, not a reliable signal that you missed something.
Some interviewers give candidates more ownership over the flow, while others guide the case closely. What matters is whether you used the information you had to choose a logical next step and explained why it mattered.
If profitability is declining and the data shows revenue is stable, choosing to investigate cost drivers next is a reasonable prioritization. The interviewer can then see both your logic and how you navigate the case.
When given control, briefly summarize what you know, name the branch you want to explore, and explain why it is the highest-priority next step.
