If I find a consultant on LinkedIn and also have their work email, what is the least awkward sequence? Should I connect first, email first, or avoid doing both unless they respond?
I had a helpful coffee chat with someone in one office, but I am more interested in another location. Is it okay to ask whether they know anyone there who might be willing to speak with me?
Mayank G.CoachYes, as long as the request is natural and the first conversation went well. Consultants often have colleagues in other offices, but you should make the introduction easy to decline.
I scheduled a 20-minute coffee chat, but the conversation wrapped up naturally after about ten minutes. Should I have tried to keep it going, or is a short conversation fine if I got the information I needed?
Mayank G.CoachA ten-minute coffee chat can be completely fine if the conversation reached a natural stopping point. You do not need to fill the scheduled time for the sake of it.
I expected an informational conversation, but sometimes the consultant starts asking why consulting, why this office, or what I have been working on. Should I treat that like an informal interview, or keep the conversation relaxed and redirect back to my questions?
Mayank G.CoachTreat it as a normal conversation with a slightly higher level of preparedness. Consultants often ask about your background because they are curious, not because a hidden interview has officially started.
