Treat 'very close' as encouraging but incomplete feedback. It does not tell you which specific behavior kept you from the offer.
Recruiters often summarize the decision at a high level. The wording may genuinely reflect a competitive performance, but you still need concrete evidence before deciding that only minor changes are needed.
A candidate can be strong overall but still have one recurring weakness in synthesis, fit, or case judgment. Being 'close' does not identify which of those areas mattered.
Write down where you felt least consistent across the interviews and compare that with any specific comments the firm did provide. Build your next prep plan around observable weaknesses rather than the word 'close' alone.
