Try forcing a two-step process: first describe the most important pattern, then immediately ask what that pattern implies for the client’s problem. Insight is usually just data plus implication.
For example, saying ‘Segment A is declining’ is description. Saying ‘Segment A is declining while margins remain highest there, so the client may have a retention problem in its most valuable segment’ is insight.
The shift happens when you stop treating the chart as the destination and start treating it as evidence for a decision. You may also find it helpful to read turning data into insight if you want a more structured way to practice this.
