It is realistic, but only if you approach it strategically. Consulting firms do value physicians, especially when you can demonstrate structured problem solving, stakeholder management, resilience, and a credible interest in business problems beyond clinical work.
The first thing to clarify is whether you are targeting a generalist path, a healthcare-focused path, or a more expert-oriented route. That matters because the recruiting story, resume positioning, and likely fit with your background can differ a lot.
You should also pressure-test your motivations honestly. If you mainly want to escape medicine, that is not enough. If you can clearly explain why consulting is the right next platform and what you bring that a traditional candidate may not, the pivot becomes much more compelling.
Before diving into recruiting, talk to physicians who already made the transition, rewrite your resume in consulting language, and run a few real case interviews. Those steps will tell you very quickly whether the switch feels realistic for you.
