There is no single years-of-experience cutoff that works across every firm, office, and role. ‘Experienced hire’ is a recruiting category, not one universal seniority level.
With around three years of experience, you may already be outside some campus-style pipelines, especially if you are no longer affiliated with a university. At the same time, you are still early enough in your career that firms may consider you for relatively junior consulting levels depending on your background.
What matters is how the role is posted and how your experience maps to the firm’s career ladder. A recruiter will look at the type of work you have done, your level of ownership, leadership, industry expertise, and whether you are applying as a generalist or specialist.
If the posting is unclear, ask recruiting rather than guessing based on years alone. Applying at the wrong level can create unnecessary confusion, while a quick conversation can tell you which path the office actually wants you to use. A useful reference is who qualifies as an experienced hire in consulting.
