A nontraditional background is not automatically a disadvantage if you can show the core skills consulting firms assess.
Before recruiting, translate your operating experience into leadership, problem solving, teamwork, and measurable impact, and become comfortable explaining unfamiliar business concepts at a general-manager level.
Use the MBA period to build case interview skills, learn the consulting recruiting timeline, and speak with firms early enough to understand office and practice preferences.
Your goal is not to imitate candidates from finance or strategy. It is to make your prior experience legible and demonstrate that you can learn quickly across new business contexts. For a related reference, see MBB recruiting preparation.
